Also, a skilled practitioner can often see your issues more clearly than you can yourself. I pay close attention to subtle shifts in your breathing, the moisture level of your eyes, your body language, the emotional intensity of your voice—all this information helps me zero in on what’s really going on deep down, to make the really big changes. Finally, one of the best ways to learn EFT is through having one or more sessions with a skilled practitioner. You not only learn and practice the basic tapping procedures, you also develop insight into how to successfully engage your own unique issues. A big part of EFT success is ‘knowing what to say’ and every EFT session is like a mini-course, specially tailored just for you. Back to the top of the page How many sessions will I need?Obviously this depends on what you want to accomplish. A simple phobia, or a specific traumatic memory can usually be resolved very quickly—possibly in one session. Resolving a painful divorce might have a number of aspects to deal with and could take four or five sessions, maybe more. Most of my clients are free of their issues between one and seven sessions. Some people have a great many traumatic memories, sometimes hidden, and often forming the basis of a toxic self-image, or self-sabotaging behaviors. This might take a bit longer to sort out, especially if there is a lot of “detective work” required. But the good news is that with EFT is that is doesn't matter how "intense" your issue is, or how long you've suffered from it, you can still expect rapid results. Even if you have a mountain of issues, you are likely to begin feeling better right away. Back to the top of the page Do phone sessions really work?Phone sessions can be just as effective as an office visit. Most EFT practitioners have their clients tap on themselves anyway, even in office visits—so tapping over the phone isn’t really much different. I've had great results over the phone! After setting up a convenient time, I call my clients on the phone or use Skype (I pay for the call), and find out what issues they want to address. I usually ask a few background questions, but most of the session is really focused on those specific issues. I direct you on what to say and which points to tap, just like in an office visit. It’s actually very easy. One thing I really like about phone sessions is that I can take detailed notes while we talk, which help me stay very focused. I also rely heavily on listening to the emotional undercurrents in the voice and breathing. My client’s say it’s nice to be able to do a session at home, without the distractions of driving and parking. Back to the top of the page Can I call you on Skype to save on long distance?I always pay for the call anyway, but I love Skype and prefer to use it if you have an account. At this time I’m not set up to do video sessions, but may try it out soon. Back to the top of the page What can EFT be used on?Some of the issues I have treated clients for include fear of public speaking, PTSD, divorce issues, anxiety and panic attacks, sexual abuse, hay fever and allergies, back pain, intense shame and guilt, anger and rage, jealousy, depression, weight issues, self hate, a child’s adoption issues, perfectionism, school and homework issues, sexual dysfunction, neck pain, tumors and related cancer issues, fear of dating and relationships, ritual abuse, phobias, writer’s block… Essentially all emotional problems are likely to benefit from EFT (although conditions that run the risk of severe ab-reactions, such as PTSD, should be left to experienced practitioners). Many physical conditions have also been successfully treated with EFT, although it should be used as an adjunct to proper medical care. For example, if you break your leg you’ll need a doctor to set it and put it in a cast. EFT might then be used to address the emotional issues around the accident, such as embarrassment, or anger. Or you might have feelings of despair about being laid up. EFT could be used to address any physical pain, or even swelling and bruising. Any fears that you might not heal correctly, or that it might take a long time can be tapped away. None of this can in any way hurt, and there have been many such cases where the EFT seemed to dramatically speed the healing process. Our motto is “try it on everything”. Back to the top of the page I’ve had this problem for a long time, will EFT still work?Yes.
If you still have the problem, that means that you have a
disruption in your energy system now. And that disruption
can be tapped away. It makes little or no difference at all
how long the disruption has been there. What if my problem is too painful for me to talk about? If you are tuned into the problem at all, then the disruption in your energy system can be tapped away. Aside from an assessment of the emotional intensity, your practitioner doesn’t need to know anything about it. This is one of the things that makes EFT unique. You
also don’t need to be fully immersed in the pain of your
issue to fully resolve it. A good practitioner has
techniques to gently discharge the issue with a minimum of
distress. This makes EFT the most effective approach to
PTSD. What if I can’t remember how my problem started?Because we’re primarily dealing with the disruption in your energy system, we don’t need to know exactly what is causing it. We can get to it by addressing the physical sensations or symptoms the problem creates in your body, or the general unpleasant feelings it brings up. Often however, memories will begin to surface, as their associated emotions are discharged and they become “safe” to remember. Because the psyche may be heavily defended against the pain of remembering, it can take a little longer to resolve a problem with this sort of “amnesia”. But progress will still likely be astonishingly fast, compared with traditional ‘talk’ therapy. Back to the top of the page Are There Any Side Effects To Using EFT?No. Aside from increased vitality, clarity and inner peace. It’s possible that your emotions may be stirred up, of course. If you’ve made yourself “comfortably numb” for some time, it may be a little uncomfortable having feelings show up again. Most people have the opposite experience. They seek out EFT because something in their life is distressing or painful or oppressive, and welcome the relief from excess emotion. Back to the top of the page Are there any other benefits?Yes.
Once you’ve learned how to use EFT you’ll have a
powerful tool at your disposal, one you can use anywhere and
anytime, for yourself or for others. Whether you go on to
actively “clean up” your subconscious, or simply use
it as difficult situations (inevitably) show up, EFT will empower
you to live a healthier, more successful life. Why does EFT focus on the negative so much? Isn’t this harmful?Have you ever had a sliver in your finger? Even a small one can be very uncomfortable, and you are unlikely to deal with it by taking vitamins, getting plenty of fresh air and exercise and eating a balanced diet. All of those things can help build your immune system, but if you’ve got a painful sliver you’ll probably want to get it out as soon as possible. We all have emotional “slivers”. Sometimes they become too painful to ignore and EFT is like the world’s best set of tweezers. EFT removes or neutralizes the negativity that doesn’t belong in us, and this allows our natural state of health and well being to be restored. A skillful practitioner will aid this process by helping to reframe one’s issues in the context of self-acceptance, understanding and forgiveness. Back to the top of the page As a small business owner, how can EFT help me succeed?Even the best business plan can be thwarted by mental and emotional blocks to success. Fear of failure, fear of success (!), fear of public speaking, feelings of inadequacy, beliefs about scarcity, guilt about prosperity, all of these are “tappable” issues. Many people work hard at the ‘Law of Attraction’ with poor results, but affirmations and visualizations built on a subconscious foundation of failure are doomed. The good news is that it’s fast, easy and even enjoyable to tap away old limiting thoughts and feelings with EFT. And
sessions with a Success Coach may be tax deductible! Talk
about a good investment. I’m very skeptical about EFT. Will it work even though I don’t believe in it?Yes. Belief makes no difference to your success. Skepticism is usually a very healthy attitude, protecting us against hearsay and unsubstantiated claims—the snake oil salesmen of the world, by basing judgment on real evidence or sound argument. But it can also be a mask for an unwillingness to change and grow, a kind of psychic inertia. A truly skeptical person will give EFT a fair trial and rightly judge it by the results, giving credit where credit is due. Unfortunately, some people will attribute successful EFT results to almost anything else, even to the point of absurdity. This is almost comical, except that it keeps them from continuing on with their healing. Back to the top of the page Isn't
EFT just the placebo effect?
Is
this a “quick fix” or permanent healing?
What can I expect from the EFT process? When I begin working with a client I ask what are the major issues they’d like to overcome, and get just enough background information to begin. If my client is nervous about the session we’ll spend a few minutes clearing that away first. Unlike traditional “talk therapy” it isn’t necessary for me to do a lengthy history intake. We can get right to work! And as specific memories or feelings are cleared, we may get deeper into resolving underlying issues. I will usually stop to tap whenever your emotional intensity begins to spike, and this tends to keep the session pretty upbeat, even if we’re dealing with very heavy issues. The experience of having one’s darkest feelings quickly vanish is a little strange at first. It’s an unfamiliar sensation, but an inherently wonderful process. Clients usually leave my office in a very good mood, even if they came in crying. Back to the top of the page
Because basic EFT is so easy to learn, and good results relatively easy to come by, many therapists, counselors, chiropractors, and other folk have added it to the modalities they already offer. And that’s great. For many problems basic EFT is sufficient, and the more folks doing it the better. I’d love everyone in the world to know how to use it. However, as easy as it is to learn the basic method, mastering the “art of delivery” requires intensive study and practice. Gary Craig’s official certification process requires a minimum of one year of providing EFT to a minimum of 100 different individuals in one on one sessions, along with careful study of the manual, tutorials and nearly 40 hours of training dvds. To study for the exam required watching most of these dvds at least twice. The fee for the initial exam is $300, and there was absolutely no way to fake one’s way through it. Certification
guarantees the practitioner is well grounded in theory and
practice and has a definite passion and commitment to EFT.
Back to the top of
the page Imagine
quickly shedding the excess negative baggage and getting on with
building a positive foundation for your partnership, based on
honest and open communication. Fortunately this is rarely necessary. Once enough of them are cleared, perhaps 5 to 20 or so, all the rest lose their emotional intensity and the entire issue is collapsed. We call this the generalization effect. Back to the top of the page
About RobHow did you learn about EFT?Some years back, my kids were arguing (which wasn't unusual) but my wife was staying cool as a cucumber (which was unusual). This really got my attention. Normally the arguing would send her into an emotional tailspin. She told me she'd been "tapping". I was so impressed I began studying EFT in earnest, starting with the manual. I began by tapping on my worst old memories every morning for a week or two. My excitement grew as I watched the training dvds, read The Promise of Energy Psychology and Gary’s website and frequent newsletters. In January of 2008 I attended two training workshops and then a third one in March. At that time I began my EFT practice. I've been a counselor since 1983, but EFT gave me tremendous new enthusiasm for my career. Back to the top of the page How long have you been practicing EFT?I
began studying EFT sometime in 2007 and began seeing clients in
March 2008. Can you tell me more about your specialties? My main specialty is relieving emotional trauma, including PTSD, in adults and children. I believe that EFT offers the best approach to this work, as it is relatively pain free and amazingly fast. I am especially interested in relationships and have done a great deal of work with clients recovering from a difficult divorce (often involving the pain of infidelity). Having been happily married for 25 years now, I am also very interested in helping couples avoid divorce by developing successful communication and intimacy. Much of my early career as a counselor involved working with children and teens. I only wish I had had EFT back then! I love working with young people and have experience using EFT with adoption and step-parenting issues, school anxiety, self-esteem issues and traumatic memories. Children tend to heal amazingly fast with EFT and it is a joy helping them. Back to the top of the page What are your strengths as a Practitioner? My
clients tell me they trust me. They feel they can tell me
anything without being judged. I believe that my background
in counseling psychology gives me a solid framework for
understanding people’s issues and how to approach them.
I tend to take this for granted a bit, but I think it’s an
important asset I bring to my sessions. I also know how to
listen very carefully. I am intensely aware of the
emotional undercurrents in my client’s voice and how
certain words carry extra meaning. I’m hyper aware of
body language, the subtle moisture levels in the eyes, breathing
patterns—all of this information helps us discover and
resolve your core issues. Do you offer a free consultation?Yes
I do. For most people, choosing a therapist, or practitioner, is
a big deal. Deciding to "do therapy" is a real
investment of time and money and I want my clients to feel
totally confident with me before we ever start. Consultations are
typically 15 to 20 minutes. They do not include tapping,
but rather provide an opportunity to discuss your issues and
whether EFT can help. I do my best to answer questions
objectively and to just 'be myself'. Of course, I also have
clients who skip this step and simply book a session by phone or
email, and that’s fine too. Do you have a sliding scale?I offer a set number of sliding scale sessions every week. They are usually booked in advance, but you are welcome to ask and I can put you on a waiting list if you like. If
you live near Santa Rosa, I also offer an inexpensive tapping
group on Tuesday evenings 7 to 8:30 for $25. Click
here for more information. This is a great opportunity to get
terrific results for a very low cost. Space is limited, so
call for availability. Back
